On a rocky point high above the St. Lawrence, French explorer Samuel Champlain founded the first permanent French settlement in North America on July 3, 1608. In 2008, Quebec City celebrates the 400th anniversary of Champlain's feat. CBC July 2008

BACKDROP: THE CANADIAN CANCER CONTROL STRATEGY • From mid 1990’s, Public Health Agency of Canada funding supported the development and planning • Pan-Canadian networks of experts, patients and practitioners • Over 700 stakeholder organizations • The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer established as an arm’s length non-profit corporation to manage the implementation of the strategy • $250 million committed over 5 years (2007— 2012)
