Everyday we walk through Wong Nai Chung Road, but have you ever thought about its history? Do you want to know why it is called Wong Nai Chung Road?
Introduction of Wong Nai Chung Road • Wong Nai Chung Road • a major road in Happy Valley, Hong Kong. • A U-shaped road, that encircles the southern and eastern sides of the Happy Valley Racecourse.
Introduction of Wong Nai Chung Road (2) • A circular branch line of Hong Kong Tramway runs along the Wong Nai Chung Road serving Happy Valley and the Happy Valley Racecourse. Its terminus is at the southern-most tip of the road.
History • 涌, “Chung” is a Chinese word meaning canal. • In the past, there was a canal in Wong Nai Chung (WNC) Village. The canal water wasalways yellow. So people called this place Wong Nai Chung (yellow canal黃色泥水的涌). • In 1905, Hong Kong Tramways built a one-way railway along WNC road.
In 1848, when the racecourse was built, Britain started horse-racing in HK. Transportation started to develop in the 1890s.
History (2) • In 1905, Hong Kong Tramways built a one-way railway along WNC road. • In 1903, Britain erected a few boundary stones of Victoria City here. One of them is still standing on WNC Road.
History (3) • In 1923, the HK government started to develop Happy Valley into a posh residential district. • WNC Village was removed. Leighton Hill(one of the posh residential complexes in Happy Valley)
The present-day view of WNC Do you think WNC has changed a lot?
Do you think it will be better for Wong Nai Chung Road to be converted into a two-way road?
Conclusion We think that Wong Nai Chung Road is not suitable for conversion into a two-way street. Because: • Residential district • Many students • Traffic disruption • Construction cost • Opposed by the local residents
Conclusion (2) • Traffic disruption • The traffic is very smooth at present. If it changes into two-way traffic, it definitely will cause traffic congestion as well as take a long time for construction purpose. • Construction cost • Converting Wong Nai Chung Road to a two-way street needs plenty of money. • Opposed by the local residents • Heavy traffic will destroy the peaceful condition of Happy Valley.
Reflection • After doing this project, we learnt that we have to search for information earlier because finding information is difficult. There is not much related information in the library or online. • When we were doing the project, we have some arguments about how to search for information more efficiently.
