  2. The process in Biology • Peer assessment of teaching (6-12 months in advance) • Did class start and end on time • Eye contact • Visual aids • Voice • Was lecturer prepared? • Good examples used? • Class involvement? • Answered questions well? • Other comments or suggestions

  3. The process continued … • Approximately 3 months before, provided with template for the application • In Biology, the application consisted of filling in this template (~16 pages) • Documenting research, service and teaching

  4. The tenure application: Teaching • Summary of annual performance reviews • Teaching activities • courses, term, load • Summary of student teaching evaluations • Overall common score to question #9 “Rate the overall QUALITY of Teaching in this course” • Number of students in the course • Response rate

  5. The tenure application: Teaching • Involvement in Curriculum Development (undergraduate and graduate) • Discuss each course detailing the changes that have been made since or if it is a new course what went into designing it • How it fits into the curriculum through changes made by you

  6. The tenure application: Teaching • Candidate’s statement • Teaching philosophy • Teaching awards • Highlight comments from student evaluations or emails • What is it about your courses that provides something unique to the students?

  7. Suggestions • Save emails, letters, evaluations in a “tenure folder” • Keep your CV up to date • Think about your teaching philosophy • Ask for copies of the tenure application from your colleagues • Give yourself time to go over the application
