Humans grow from a single cell…HOW?!?!

Humans grow from a single cell…HOW?!?!. Cells make copies of themselves in a process called MITOSIS. (MY-TOE-SIS). Cell Cycle. Pre-Mitosis: INTERPHASE. This is where the cell spends most of its time Cell grows, gain nutrients, copies DNA. Interphase = In-between. Step 1: PROPHASE.

  1. Humans grow from a single cell…HOW?!?!

  2. Cells make copies of themselves in a process called MITOSIS • (MY-TOE-SIS)

  3. Cell Cycle

  4. Pre-Mitosis: INTERPHASE • This is where the cell spends most of its time • Cell grows, gain nutrients, copies DNA

  5. Interphase = In-between

  6. Step 1: PROPHASE • DNA condenses into chromosomes • Chromosomes pair up with their exact copy • Nucleus breaks down

  7. Prophase = Pairs

  8. Step 2: METAPHASE • Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell • Chromosomes are attached to fibers that stretch from the poles to the middle of the cell

  9. Metaphase = Middle

  10. Step 3: ANAPHASE • The stage when chromosomes separate • Each singular chromosome pulled to opposite sides of the cell by fibers in the cell

  11. Anaphase = Apart

  12. Step 4: TELOPHASE • Cell membrane pinches off to form two cells • Nuclear envelope reforms around DNA • Chromosomes uncondense

  13. Telophase = Two Cells

  14. How to remember the steps of mitosis… • I Peed on a MAT!

  26. 6th period • REMINDER: FINAL PAPERS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY. You can email it to me, print it and bring it to class or bring a flash drive • There is a quiz THIS Friday: parts of a cell, stem cells, mitosis, cancer

  27. 8th period • We’re going to move fast today! • On FRIDAY we will be going to the college fair this class period, so I’m doing today and Friday’s lesson all in our 30 minutes today! • Let’s do this!

  28. Wednesday 10-12-11 • Do Now • 5 minute mini-lecture • 20 minutes -worksheet

  29. Mitosis in a little more detail: • Another organelle to know: CENTRIOLE (singular) • Centrosome (plural) • They are made up of 9 microtubules

  30. Prophase photo:

  31. Metaphase Photo:

  32. Anaphase:

  33. A closer look at chromosomes:

  34. A closer look a telophase: cytokinesis

  35. Please Do Now • What is the acronym for remembering the cell cycle? • What are the names of the five stages of the cell cycle? • What do these stages look like?

  36. Game Plan IF YOU’RE DONE WITH YOUR ESSAY: IF YOU’RE NOT DONE WITH YOUR ESSAY: PDN “This I Believe Essay” Prep for Presenting Tomorrow Cell Cycle Worksheet for Skills Practice • PDN • Cell Cycle Worksheet • Cell Cycle Flip Book
