1st: Write down your TALE2nd: Homework in the center of table3rd: BELLRINGER – SEPT 22, 2010 • Is an owl predator or prey? • What features/abilities does it have that give you that answer? • True or False: The difference between primary succession and secondary succession is that secondary succession starts on bare rock where nothing was previously living and primary succession starts where organisms were previously living.
What is an Owl Pellet? • When you eat beef, which parts do you discard? • Bone • Fur • Owls discard the same things… Just in a different way! • Regurgitated • to eject what has previously been swallowed.
You will: • Work as a team!!! (An alternate assignment is available.) • Dissect your group’s owl pellet, identifying the bones on the owl pellet bone ID chart. • It can’t hurt you! • You will not be able to finish today. We will continue tomorrow. • When you have dissected your whole pellet, you will glue the bones to the chart. • A lab report will be due October 4th!
Problem: • Can you determine the diet of a common barn owl by dissecting the regurgitated byproducts? Some possible hypotheses: • Owls eat only shrews. • Owls eat shrews and rodents. • Owls eat shrew, rodents, moles, and birds.
