  2. Attack on Fort Sumter – SC (1861) “First Shots” of the Civil War After Fort Sumter fell: -Lincoln called for volunteers for the army and Northerners rushed to sign up -Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee seceded from the Union (now 11 states in the CSA)

  3. Battle of Bull Run – VA (1861) “First Battle” of the Civil War People thought the war would be “a picnic” Troops on both sides were inexperienced – Why? Union troops retreated (Lincoln asks 500,000 more men to enlist for next battle)

  4. Remember the Anaconda Plan… 1.) Cut off trade by blockading southern ports. 2.) Cut the Confederacy in TWO by taking control of Mississippi River 3.) Capture the Confederate Capital at Richmond, VA

  5. Attack on Fort Donelson - TN (1862) U.S. General Grant captured the fort and gained control of: Tennessee River Cumberland River (access to Mississippi River)

  7. Battle of Shiloh – TN (1862) General Grant Wanted to gain control of the Mississippi River 25,000 casualties Confederates retreated

  8. Battle of Antietam – MD (1862) Union army advancing toward Richmond, VA Battle was a standoff – but the CSA retreated 26,000 casualties (bloodiest single-day battle in American history)
