  1. Access Prior Knowledge Lesson 2: How do Species change? Opening Activity Open Science textbook to page 170. Open Science Workbook to page 56A to check home learning. Open Science folder to review vocabulary words and outline for the chapter. Open Science journal and answer the following questions: 1. What are some things that can change an ecosystem? Review Content Cards and Q-Cards in bin, sharing with partners quizzing each other
quietly. Log in to clickers using student ID number. Be ready to review home learning when timer goes off. Don't forget to write your
home learning in your
agenda page 57A.

  2. Do you agree with the statement? 1 Every animal inherits the same mix of genes from its parents. Yes No

  3. Do you agree with the statement? 2 The environment does not affect a species’s appearance. Yes No

  4. Do you agree with the statement? 3 A hummingbird’s long beak is a structural adaptation. Yes No

  5. Do you agree with the statement? 4 Adaptations to an environment can help a species live longer. Yes No

  6. Inheriting DNA Traits Not Inherited Plants and animals inherit half of
their genes or DNA from each parent,
which decides almost everything
about how an organism grows. Every animal is different since we
get a mix of genes, but are similar
because they have two eyes and one
nose, ect. The environment also plays a
role with certain traits in animals,
like the snowshoe hares fur turns
white in the winter so that it can
hide better in the snow. First paragraph pg. 170 Second paragraph pg. 171

  7. Adaptations A change in an organism’s genes that can be passed from parent to
offspring is called mutation, which can be helpful, harmful or neither. Organisms with adaptations to compete for limited resources may survive
and pass their genes to their offspring. Structural Adaptations Behavioral Adaptations Structural adaptations are changed
body parts that help an organism live in
its environment. A bird’s beak might be of different
shapes depending on what food it needs
to get. A male lion’s mane makes him look
bigger and protects his neck. Behavioral adaptations are
inherited behaviors that help
animals survive. Bees and ants are born with
instincts that help them work
together in their habitat. Lions do not know how to hunt
when they are born, but the
parents teach the cub how to hunt
and find food to survive, making it
a learned behavior. First paragraph pg. 172 Third paragraph pg. 172 First paragraph pg. 173

  8. MatchQuest Behavioral Adaptations Structural Adaptations suction cups on frogs toes lion hunting humming birds long beak Behaviors humming birds nest

  9. TextQuest Answer questions in your Science Journal. 1. How many genes do offspring get from each parent? 2. Give an example of structural adaptation. 3. Give an example of behavioral adapation. 4. How can the environment affect the appearance of an
organism? Don't forget to write your
home learning in your
agenda page 57A.
