xFOCE Update W. J. Kirkwood 19 NOV 2013
Mechanical Design • Schedule 40 PVC pipe standard irrigation piping available almost anywhere • Van-Stone flanges glued to pipe, standard pipe flanges • Gaskets also purchased or can be made on site from sheet • End caps either manufactured from bulk PVC or purchased
Step by Step Instructions being documented Instructions include thermal calc spreadsheet
Basic Architecture • Diver serviceable ocean acidification platform • Perfect candidate for modular concept • Large number of scientific instruments • Housings easy to swap in-situ • Central Node • Feeds 2 swFOCE chambers
Gateway Node • Modular controller which: • Collects data from subsea instrumentation. • Disseminates data to shore station and peer nodes. • Acts as the central computer in experimental control loop
Gateway Node: Electrical Design • Uses BeagleBone as central computer • Load switching & serial communication to four Sensor Nodes • Seawater ground fault measurement • Power monitoring for each Sensor Node
Sensor Node • Modular instrument interface • Serial & power expansion for multiple instruments • Easy to fabricate and inexpensive
Sensor Node: Electrical Design • Four science ports • Voltage/power user selectable • Three serial outputs • 4-20mA option • Individual load switching & power monitoring
Sensor Node: Mechanical Design • Simple, inexpensive housing • Filled with potting compound • No connectors, use whips instead
Gateway Node: Software Design • Supervisor module oversee all functions • Sampling modules • Collect data • Control modules • Maintain specific pH within test chamber • Distribution modules • Disseminates collected data The same basic software is used for each element
Other Tools Tools for CO2 use, pH offset and tau I’ve considered Python to make the calcs real time on the webpage. The Excel file is available now on request. We need to document further for the open source download.
Other Tools Control script modeling available Currently in MATLAB Wondering if Excel is worth doing or some other language? I’ve considered Python to make the calcs real time on the webpage.
