Introduction The idea evolved from two different contractor customers who shared with us a better way to perform hydrostatic testing of DWV piping system. Two different, yet related approaches of hydrostatic testing: ► One involved a modification to a standard cleanout tee ► The other involved a reusable test manifold/sanitary tee Main Concerns ►Contractor Safety ► The Mold Liability - due to water spilling inside the chase ► Reliability of testing 1
Usual Steps Hydrostatic Testing The most common way of performing hydrostatic testing involves the use of inflatable plugs. • Remove cleanout plug from stack cleanout tee. • Insert inflatable plug and inflate to seal off the stack just above the cleanout opening. • All floor drain lines are sealed in a similar manner. • All lavatory, urinal and water closet lines are sealed. • The system is filled with water until water reaches the highest elevation. • System must hold pressure for 15 minutes to pass. • Test is usually performed in the presence of an inspector who verifies the system. 2
Hydrostatic Testing Issues However, as simple as this test method appears there are some common problems associated with it. Common Problems • Inflatable plugs are unreliable - Leaks require system re-test • Removal of inflatable plugs - Spilling of water inside the chase - Soaking the person removing the inflatable plug • Spilling of water inside the chase - Increases the risk of mold - Serious liability issue for the contractor 3
Cleanout and Test Tee Test Port with Raised Head Plug (Regularly Furnished) Countersunk Taper Thread Bronze Plug (Regularly Furnished) Fig. No. 4505Y, No- Hub Model The Boss Tee, Fig. No. 4505 Application ►Designed to be used in the sanitary DWV piping stack as a cleanout tee with the additional function of a test tee for hydrostatically testing the piping system within high-rise buildings. ►Replaces need for an unreliable inflatable plug within the main stack to test the piping system. How it works ► Internal threading – allows the stack to be closed off by installing a raised hex head plug (by others). ►Test port – allows the filling and draining of the piping system. 4
The Boss Tee, Technical Information Regularly Furnished Duco cast iron cleanout tee with internal threading, ½” NPT test port with raised head plug and countersunk taper thread bronze plug. Features ► Hub & Spigot and No-Hub outlets. ► Internal Threading for Test Plug use. ► ½” NPT Test Port with Raised Head Plug. ► Spherical opening for better hand access. ► Available in 3”, 4” and 6” pipe sizes. 5
The Boss Tee Testing Procedures ► Remove cleanout plug at face of tee. ►Thread a raised hex head plug (by others) into the internal threading. ►Remove plug from test port. ►Thread ½” NPT nipple with boiler drain valve into the port. Pressure gauge may be installed before the boiler drain valve. ►Connect water hose to the boiler drain valve and water supply to fill piping. Boiler drain valve must be in the open position. ►When piping is full of water - shut off the water supply and close the boiler drain valve. ► When testing is complete - disconnect the water hose from the water supply and place in stack, floor drain or other acceptable drainage point and open boiler drain valve to drain piping. ► When piping is completely drained - reverse steps to install the cleanout plug. Note: The Boss Tee can be used to test the piping system in the customary manner by installing a plug into the internal threading and filling the piping from the top. 6
The Boss Tee Advantages ► SAFETY – contractor not required to remove inflatable plug from inside of stack with 5 -15 psi pressure just upstream of the plug. ►REDUCES THE CHANCE OF MOLD – due to water spilling inside the chase. ►CONTROLLED TESTINGENVIRONMENT – provides contractor with effective means of controlling the filling and draining of piping system. ► RELIABILITY – better testing results because of reliable closure of the stack. ► TIME & MATERIAL SAVINGS – eliminates the inflatable plug in the vertical stack and the time to get it to seal properly. ► EFFICIENT – test up to 3 floors at a time. The inspector can use the gauge to verify pressure in the line. ►LARGER, SPHERICAL OPENING in the fitting allows for easy hand access for line testing/inspection/cleaning. ► CLEANOUT TEE REMAINS IN THE STACK after testing to be used for future maintenance and testing.
