Collaborating with Colleagues to Consolidate the Curriculum FORUM ON CURRICULUM ISSUES IV Eastern Mediterranean University December 2011
What is ‘Curriculum’? • Latin origin – ‘course’ An educational program designed with particular outcomes in mind but which most teachers are oblivious of. Curriculum is a set of all learning. It is systematized, well-organized and implemented.
All the academic activities inside & outside of the school,(curricular and co-curricular activities), the purpose behind these activities is to learn something. Curriculum is a body of subjects or subject matter prepared by the teachers for the students to learn. Curriculum is defined as the total learning of the individual.
Teacher • Student Self Study Centre • Testing • Syllabus Design & Testing • Trainer
Why are students / teachers/ departments complaining? • Is there a need to get feedback? Teachers? Students? • Students should be able to do anything put in front of them. • Is being able to read a syllabus enough to prepare materials / tests? • Is it effective to prepare materials / tests in isolation? • Working with teachers is crucial. • Listen to feedback from teachers and students.
Why aren’t teachers happy with the syllabus / materials / tests? • Why can’t students do anything? • Teachers aren’t teaching properly. • Students aren’t successful because they don’t study. • How do you prepare course materials? Task? Teachers’ notes? Answer keys? • Is collecting feedback from teachers enough? How about students? • Collaboration is crucial.
Tests? Syllabus? How about the teachers? How about the students? • How do we, teachers, follow the documentation? Can we follow it? Can students follow it? • Do we get teachers involved? • Why isn’t feedback collected from all parties? • Why don’t those involved in syllabus and testing ‘live’ the experience in real time with the students? • CLASSROOM. STUDENTS.
‘The curriculum is not simply a set of plans to be implemented, but is constituted through an active process in which planning, acting and evaluating are all reciprocally related and integrated into the process' (Grundy, S. 1987)
