History • Some of the first civilizations formed in Guatemala were Mayan cities during the first millennium A.D. • Guatemala was a Spanish colony for almost three years • Won its independence in 1821 • In the 2nd half of the 20th century it experienced a 36-year guerrilla war • The government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict in 1996

Physical Geography • Mostly mountainous • Narrow coastal plains • Scattered Mayan ruins • Natural resources include petroleum, nickel, rare woods, fish, chicle and hydropower • Numerous volcanoes • No natural harbors on west coast Environmental issues • Deforestation in the Petén rainforest • Soil erosion • Water pollution

Government and Economy • Constitutional democratic republic • Gained independence from Spain September 15 1821 • GDP-$59.47 billion • Labor force-3.68 million • Unemployment rate-7.5% • Population below poverty line-75% • Agricultural products-sugarcane, corn, bananas, coffee, beans • Industries-sugar, textiles and clothing, furniture, chemicals, petroleum, metals, rubber, tourism • Currency-Quetzal, US Dollar, others allowed

Culture • Spanish is the official language with 21 distinct Mayan languages that are still spoken as well • Major religions are Roman Catholic (50%), Protestant(40%),Others including various Mayan indigenous religion(10%) • Major Ethnic groups are Mestizos(60%), Amerindians(39%), other(1%) • Their diet consists of corn, beans, and rice. They also eat tamales, enchiladas, and tortillas. Fresh fruits from the rain forest are cheap and plentiful.
