  2. Can each operator efficiently manage your BGA rework? In reality, the answer is no in all but a handful of circumstances. What causes this? Several variables are at play, such as experience, manual dexterity, and occasionally simple talent. Your most knowledgeable operators must handle the most difficult BGA rework. Since BGA rework appeared on the market many years ago, many problems have developed for businesses that need to operate with BGA components. Buy a mini SMT stencil for BGA rework; replacement is just the first step. Addressing such assignments requires care so that all operators know the rationale and feel treated fairly. However, dealing with the BGA rework difficulties is the main emphasis, not the level of human management. One of the most important requirements before starting the rework cycle is selecting the appropriate operator to handle BGA rework. It is also the most misunderstood; based on our observations, BGA operators are a unique breed of technicians. Although that may not seem fair, it is the case. Managers, planners, engineers, and rework professionals face new difficulties due to BGA rework. The days of performing all necessary rework and inspection with a basic desoldering tool and a magnifying lamp are long gone. Those responsible for the rework needed to be trained, but training them in a few specific abilities was simple to check their work. The reworked model has completely changed with the arrival of BGA components. One might need an $80,000 BGA rework machine instead of a straightforward rework station. One requires a skilled operator instead of an upper-level assembler, one who is computer literate, familiar with solder paste, has good skill, knows how x-ray equipment works, and knows how to decipher x-ray images! One could want a $120,000 X-ray system for inspection rather than a direct microscope or magnifying light. Operators who must execute BGA rework require a wide range of abilities, including those of an operator, technician, and magician. To make the best choice when selecting a BGA rework operator, one must fully understand what these professionals do. An operator resembles a surgeon in several ways. A basic machine operator is someone who, ideally, performs under and adheres to an engineer’s instructions. The machine operator follows the profiles, tools, and processes the engineer may have developed and established.

  3. Although it seems straightforward and is the ideal scenario, things are typically trickier than they appear. The BGA rework procedure might become mired in a plethora of minor minutiae. Many current machine operators, especially those in the electronics industry, lack basic computer skills. For instance, modern top-of-the-line BGA reworks computer control machines. Despite having a similar desktop unit appearance, these PCs frequently have irritable bespoke software. The machine operator must understand the computer system and its specialized software unless your engineer likes to hold hands. Additionally, the machine operator must have a mechanical aptitude, be able to modify machine settings and choose and position the appropriate tools and nozzles. Circuit boards must be put into rework system fixtures correctly. Hence the machine operator must be knowledgeable in this area. The board’s stability during the reflow process is one of the most important components of successful BGA rework. The BGA ball interface typically experiences reflow temperature for 30 to 90 seconds. To ensure proper flow over the entire array, that temperature will also obviously be exceeded. Since most circuit boards tend to bow at the rework area, the whole panel must be highly heated to prevent this. The committee will frequently move as it gets closer to the glass transition temperature during heating. A crucial talent is the ability to fasten and support the board. Components are frequently positioned “under” BGA component rework sites (on the opposite side of the board) and around board edges. Other parts can be too big or tall to position the board at the ideal height for optical prism alignment. The pieces that completely obstruct the prism and prevent one from correctly aligning the component for rework are particularly frustrating. Some boards may have a big component (like a transformer) hanging over the side and be longer than the fixturing equipment with which the Rework machine is equipped. The transformer may cause the board to bend as it becomes heated and flexible.
