DEVELOPING A CHARITABLE CULTURE (PARTLY CULLED FROM A WRITTEN PIECE)

CHARITY IN ISLAM Once, The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked: "What is the best (way of expressing) Islam?" He replied: "It is to provide food for those who need it and to greet with peace those whom you know as well as those whom you do not know." [Sahîh al-Bukhârî]

WHAT DIDN’T WE DO RIGHT? • Giving assistance to a person with weak eyesight is charity. • Removing boulders and thorns from the road is charity. • Pouring water from your vessel into your brother's is charity. [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (1879) – and authenticated by al-Albânî
WHAT IS CHARITY? Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a man dies, all his deeds are cut off except three: • SadaqatulJariyyah (Continuous charity) • Knowledge that is benefited from • And a righteous child that prays for him. (SahihBukhari & Muslim)

CHARITY IN ISLAM Its Conditions: • Give what benefits • Don’t give what you will not want given to you (Verse 2:267) • Don’t expect payback (Verse 2: 263) • Don’t remind your beneficiary of your charity(Verse 2:264) • Seek to be discrete where possible (Verse 2:271)
CHARITY IN ISLAM Its Goal - Primary • Eebadah to Allah (SuratInsan Verse 9) - Secondary • To benefit the people • To attract people to Islam and the act of charity
CHARITY IN ISLAM Its Effect • Reward from Allah • Good and healthy society • Softens people’s heart towards Islam What happens when people refuse to give sadaqah?
THE ISLAMIC WAY.. Our culture should be one where people not only contribute money to the needy and to the public welfare, but where they also volunteer their time and skills to improving the quality of life for everyone.
WHAT CAN WE DO? • Teenagers, both male and female, should be actively encouraged to engage in volunteer charity work. They should be taught about the value of such work and the positive returns for themselves and for society that come of it. This is the job of schools, Islamic centers, and whatever social outlets the Muslims have at their disposal
WHAT CAN WE DO? • Schools can do their part by getting students involved in extra-curricular activities that contribute to the broader community. They might team up with local charity groups. They can do things as simple as organizing a neighborhood clean-up, tree planting, or other beautification project.
WHAT CAN WE DO? • Recognition should be given to outstanding volunteer workers. They should be recognized not only for their community service, but their personal and career achievements should be highlighted along with the skills that they have.
HELPING……….. Any positive contribution to society is a form of charity. It is not only the poor who should be the focus of voluntary efforts. There are many ways that volunteering ones time, money, and skills can improve civic life for all.
CHARITY IN ISLAM Pick-Up a Sadaqah Project Today • Encourage proper disposal of waste • Help clean your street (pick the litter) • Visit the hospital • Don’t turn that used cloth into a rag! Give it out whilst its still useful. • Other Ideas? Note: Apply the points discussed to each sadaqa project
