Memorial Day (May 30) Why do we make it a holiday? • Originally called Decoration Day • In honor of those who died serving the nation during wars (the Civil War, the Vietnam War…) • Has been ignored by many Americans
Memorial Day (May 30) The way to celebrate the day: • by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of the heroes • by flying the US Flag at half-staff until noon
Independence Day (Jul.4) Why do we make it a holiday? • The birthday of the USA (founded in 1776) • To commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence

Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11) Why do we make it a holiday? • The day marked the end of the WWΙ • Known as “Armistice Day”, the same day celebrated as “Remembrance Day” in UK • To honor veterans of WWΙ originally • After WW2 and Korea War, it became to honor American veterans of all wars

Youth Day (Mar.29) Why do we make it a holiday? • To commemorate the young martyrs sacrificed at the tenth uprising of Dr. Sun Yat-sen • Now, to commemorate all solders and martyrs killed in all uprising • Celebrated by honoring “Ten Outstanding Youth” of the society

Taiwan Retrocession Day (Oct.25) Why do we make it a holiday? • China was victory in the War of Resistance against Japan during WW2 • Japan agreed to sign the Instrument of Surrender on Aug.15,1945, and return Taiwan back to China. Japanese rule officially ended on Oct.25, 1945
Constitution Day (Dec.25) Why do we make it a holiday? • To remember the day of official enactment of constitution law • The constitution of the ROC was passed on Dec. 25,1946, and implemented one year later
