IST (5) • 2.3.2.1 Advanced displays (25 M€) • Objective: • To develop, demonstrate & prepare for industrialisation emerging display technologies related to organic materials, lightweight near-to-the-eye information terminals and large-size displays for the consumer • 2.3.2.2 Optical, opto-electronic, photonic functional components (45 M€) • Objective: • To develop advanced materials, micro- and nano-scale photonic structures & devices, solid-state sources and to realise optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC) I-PLANS campaign
IST (6) • 2.3.2.3 Embedded systems (50 M€) • Objective: • To develop the next generation of technologies & tools for modelling, design, implementation and operation of HW/SW systems embedded in intelligent devices • Focus: • Middleware & platforms for building Networked Embedded Systems • Concepts, methods & tools for system design • Advanced Controls for real-time systems emphasising: • Hybrid systems theories • Networked autonomous & fault-adaptive control • Reasoning, behaviour, global performance & robustness I-PLANS campaign
IST (6a) • 2.3.2.4 Open development platforms for software & services (55 M€) • Objective: • To build open development & run-time environments for SW & services providing the next generation of methodologies, interoperable middleware & tools to support developers through all phases of SW life-cycle in the production of networked & distributed SW systems & services, embedded SW, & value-added services • Focus: • High-level methods & concepts • Open & modular development environments • Light/agile methodologies & adaptive workflow • Open platforms, middleware & languages • Priority to projects with strong industrial users, SW & service suppliers, and academic research partners I-PLANS campaign
IST (7) • 2.3.2.5 Cognitive systems (25 M€) • Objective: • To construct physically-instantiated or embodied systems that can perceive, understand, and interact with their environment, and evolve in order to achieve human-like performance in activities requiring context-(situation & task) specific knowledge • Focus: • Methodologies and construction of robust & adaptive cognitive systems • Main target is interdisciplinarity, i.e. to carefully consider integration of different disciplines including computer vision, natural language understanding, robotics, AI, mathematics & cognitive neuroscience. IST (7a) • 2.3.2.6 Applications & services for mobile user & worker (60 M€) • Objective: • To foster the emergence of innovative applications & services for the mobile user & worker and to support use & development of new work methods & collaborative work environments … mobile, wireless technologies … convergence of fixed & mobile • Focus: • Integration of technologies into wide range of innovative mobile & multimodal applications & services: • Intelligent, adaptive & self-configuring services • Novel workplace designs & methods of work organisation • Addressing major hurdles for deployment of applications & services for mobile user • Openness & interoperability … location-based services (Galileo) • Interoperability of services & roaming across networks • Priorities: integrated & multidisciplinary approaches I-PLANS campaign
IST (8) • 2.3.2.7 Cross-media content for leisure & entertainment (55 M€) • Objective: • To improve full digital content chain, covering creation, acquisition, management & production, through effective multimedia technologies enabling multi-channel, cross-platform access to media, entertainment & leisure … I-PLANS campaign
IST (8a) • 2.3.2.8 GRID-based systems for solving complex problems (45 M€) • Objective: • To expand the potential of the Grid & peer-to-peer approaches to solving complex problems which cannot be solved with current technologies in application fields such as industrial design, engineering & manufacturing, health, genomics & drug design, environment, critical infrastructures, energy, business & finance, and new media • Focus: • Architecture, design & development of next generation Grid • Enabling application technologies for solution of complex problems, including tools & environments for modelling, simulation, data-mining, visualisation, process control, remote operation; collaborative working in dynamic virtual organisations • Priority: multidisciplinary, international collaboration I-PLANS campaign
IST (9) • 2.3.2.9 Improving risk management (30 M€) • Objective: • To develop open platforms, integrated systems & components for improved risk management, civil secuirty applications and environmental management. … foster emergence of European info-structure & service platforms … should contribute to GMES action plan • Focus: • Research on key IST technologies: • Robust and/or low-cost smart sensors • Advanced modelling & simulation • Decision support & visualisation tools • Grid technology • Integrated system to prevent & manage emergencies • Integrate data from earth observation (satellites e.g. GMES) • Research on new concepts to enhance civil security: • Prevention & management of industrial & terrorist threats • Research to help development of European info-structure: • Harmonisation & standardisation of ontologies & meta-data architectures I-PLANS campaign
IST (9a) • 2.3.2.10 eInclusion (30 M€) • Objective: • To promote eInclusion as a core horizontal building-block in the establishment of the Information Society to ensure equal access and participation for all in Europe • To develop intelligent systems that empower persons with disabilities and ageing citizens to play a full role in society and increase their autonomy I-PLANS campaign
FP6 instruments (1) • Integrated Project (IP): • Multi-partner projects to support objective-driven research: • At any point in the research spectrum • Single project may span large parts of spectrum • Must contain a research component • May contain technological development & demonstration components • Perhaps contains a training component • Primary deliverable is generating knowledge to implement the thematic priorities I-PLANS campaign
FP6 instruments (2) • Integrated Project (IP) (continued): • Integration can be: • Vertical: “value-chain” of stakeholders • Horizontal: range of multidisciplinary activities • Activity: from fundamental to applied research, incl. take-up, protection & dissemination of knowledge, training, etc • Sectoral: actors from private & public sector research organisations, esp. academia & industry, incl. SMEs • Financial: public & private funding • Participation: • Minimum of 3 participants, from 3 different Member or Associated States • Value: • Up to many tens of millions of euros I-PLANS campaign
FP6 instruments (3) • Network of Excellence (NoE): • Multi-partner projects aimed at strengthening scientific & technical excellence • Joint programme of activities aimed at creating durable integration of research capacities of partners: • Institutions have to invest seriously in structural change aiming at integration of their research capacities • Requires commitment at all levels of decision-making in institutions, incl. top management, supervising & financing bodies • Main result: • Durable restructuring and reshaping of the way research is carried out in Europe in a given area • Size: • Up to several hundreds of researchers • Several millions to tens of millions of euros I-PLANS campaign
FP6 instruments (4) • Specific Targeted Research & Specific Targeted Innovation Projects (STREP/STIP): • Multi-partner research, demonstration or innovation projects: • STREP: implementing thematic priority areas • STIP: exploring, validating & disseminating new innovation concepts at European level • To support research, technological development & demonstration or innovation activities of more limited scope than IPs: • Hundreds of thousands to few millions of euros • Min. 3 participants from 3 different Member or Associated States I-PLANS campaign
