MAIN and WWI • As with most wars, there were several causes of World War I. • Today, we called the causes of World War I the M.A.I.N. causes. • Militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism all played a role in starting what is known as The Great War. World War I would last from 1914 to 1918. The war would cost millions of lives and cause tremendous amounts of damage around Europe.
M-Militarism • Definition: Building up armed forces, getting ready for war. • Example: As Britain had the most powerful navy she was worried about other countries building up their armed forces. This is a worry about militarism.
Weapons of World War I. Countries around Europe were building up their armies, tanks, guns and planes.
A- Alliances • Definition: agreements or promises to defend and help another country. • Example: • Central Powers (Triple Alliance)Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary • Allied Powers (Triple Entente) France, Great Britain, Russia, U.S.
I-Imperialism • Definition: trying to build up an empire, control colonies • Example: Germany wished to build her empire and expand her control over Europe
N-Nationalism • Definition: having pride in your country, willing to defend it, claiming independence for your country • Example: • The Balkan Peninsula was made up of several European countries such as Serbia, Austria-Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Turkeyand Yugoslavia • Many Serbs in Austria-Hungary wanted to take over Serbia • Made them the enemy of the people of Serbia who wanted to keep their independence
