What is NICE? • The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) provides national guidance on treatments and care in the NHS in England and Wales • NICE guidance is for healthcare professionals and patients to help them make informed decisions about treatment and healthcare
What types of guidance does NICE produce? • Technology appraisals (use of discrete drugs or therapies) • Clinical Guidelines (cover wider management and treatment of patients with a specific condition) • Interventional procedures (advice on safety of new procedures)
How does NICE involve patients and carers? • NICE stakeholder process (consultation - all guidance products) • Membership of NICE committees and working groups (direct input) • One-off projects (indirect input) • Public versions (information)
Evidence of clinical and cost effectiveness: recommend use of a treatment or intervention Evidence of non-effectiveness: recommend non usage Inconclusive or lack of evidence: suggest need for further research Content of NICE guidance
