  1. Reaction Time and Distance Financial math

  2. There are 5,280 feet in a mile • At 55 Miles per hour you will cover (5,280X55) Feet in one hour, or 290,400 feet. • There are 60 minutes in one hour. At 55 miles per hour you will cover (290,400/60) feet per minute, or 4,840 feet per minute. • There are 60 seconds in a minute. At 55 miles per hour you will cover (4840/60) feet per second, or 80.67 feet rounded up to 81 feet per second.

  3. Reaction distance • The reaction distance is the # of feet covered by a vehicle at a given speed times the reaction time. • A vehicle traveling at 55 miles per hour covers 81 feet per second. And the average drivers reaction time is 1.5 seconds multiply the distance the vehicle travels per second by the reaction time to find the reaction distance.

  4. Formula for reaction distance 81X 1.5 = 121.5 feet 81 = distance a car covers in one second at 55 miles per hour 1.5 is the average drivers reaction time 121.5 = the number of feet it takes to stop a car traveling at 55 miles per hour.
