  3. Mr. Eisenberg • 10th Year Teaching at Los Al • B.S. Physics: UCI • M.S. Science Education: UCI • Most interesting thing I ever learned was how waves interfere with each other. • Every new year is exciting and an opportunity to meet new students. • It scares me that I will never be as exciting as your smart phone. • I love soccer. • I am a terrible speller.

  4. A few rules • Be respectful to yourself and each other. • Be on time. • No food or gum. • No phones. • Handheld sharpeners are to be used for colored pencils.

  5. Things you need by Tuesday • Physics Folder • You can leave bookwork in a spiral bound folder. • Calculator Scientific or Graphing • I suggest the 2-line TI Scientific Calculators ($15 or less at Staples or Target • Protractor • A 4-color pen or a set of colored pens • I like to use different colors and it helps if your notes are colored too.

  6. Assignment #2 • Make a name tag. Make it nice. You have 10 min.

  7. Assignment #3 • Get into groups of 3. • Make a pendulum. • How long does it take you pendulum to swing? • What could you do to change how long it take your pendulum to swing? • Organize your data.

  8. Make a clock • What do you need to do to make your pendulum swing 60 times in 60 seconds. • Record all of your trials. • You have 15 minutes.

  9. Results • What did you need to do to make the pendulum swing 60 times in 60 seconds? • What did you need to change? • What happened when you change the mass (# of washers)? • What happened when you change the length of the string? • How does this agree with your original prediction about how to set up your pendulum?

  10. Hypothesis and Prediction • Write a hypothesis about the period of a pendulum? • Write a prediction about the period of a pendulum? • What would you need to do to double (or half) the period of the pendulum?

  11. Length vs. Period • How does changing the length affect the period of the pendulum? • Graph 10 data points of length vs. time. • Can you find the relationship. • How long would the string need to be to swing 60 times in 180 seconds?

  12. Why physics? • What is the difference between science and technology?

  13. It is human nature to be curious. We then try to group things so that we can understand the most things with the fewest number of rules. • Ex: Is sand just rocks? Is the moon just a big rock? • If we understand rocks, do we understand the moon?

  14. Scientific Method – Richard Feynman • Don’t fool yourself. • Don’t let others fool you. • Only test one thing. • Just because your experiment failed does not mean you failed to make a contribution.

  15. Extra Credit AssignmentDue: Wednesday September 5 • Find a consumer product that makes a dubious scientific claim. • Print out or attach product. • Discuss scientific claim. What is dubious? How can you address this claim? What would be a better claim. • 1 to 2 Paragraphs. Must fit on one page front and back.
