Entailment (n)- A legal situation regarding the use of inherited property. Sentence: The actress, Joan Crawford, was worth millions of dollars but left nothing in entailment for her two children. .
Sojourn (n)- A brief visit, to stay somewhere temporarily. Sentence: She had sojourned once in Egypt. .
Contentious (adj)- always ready to fight or argue. Sentence: The boys were always up for a contentious fight after school. .
Edification (n)- Education or instruction. Sentence: Chevron believes in the edification of America in order to increase knowledge in science. VIDEO .
Morbid (adj)- gruesome or horrible. Sentence: The way sharks eat is often considered to be morbid because it is so bloody. VIDEO .
Prowess (noun)- Superior ability or skill Sentence: The woman showed great prowess in her job as a construction worker. .
Waning- becoming less bright or intense. Sentence: As the lamp began to die the light began to wane. .
Cordial- warm and friendly. Sentence: The man was very cordial to the children as they passed. .
Gallantly (adv)- polite, in the manner of gentlemen. Sentence: The man gallantly ate the cupcake. VIDEO .
Ingenuous (adj)- showing innocent childhood simplicity. The ingenuous child had created a picture that she thought was a work of art. .
Invectives (n)- abusive terms, curses, insults. The man hurled harsh invectives towards his child when he fell down. .
Rudiments (n)- principles; elements; subjects to be learned. The rudiments of school are all the basic core classes: English, math, science, and history. .
Degradation (n)- a state of low honor or moral character. VIDEO Some feel that violence on television has caused the moral degradation of society. .
Passé- old fashioned, not from the current time. In the movie “Never Been Kissed,” Josie dressed very passé, as if she was living in the 1980s. .
Undulate (v)- to move in waves or in a wavy manner. VIDEO The men completed a special workout that had them undulate ropes in a 2 minute succession. .
Habiliments (n)- outfits, clothing. Every culture has it’s own specific habiliments. .
futile (adj)- feeling of being ineffective, useless, or hopeless. After breaking his arm, the young man felt his efforts to help the team win were futile. .
Uncouth (adj)- crude or unmannerly. VIDEO Many people believe that to eat face-first in your plate is very uncouth. .
Subpoena (n)- a written legal order directing a person to appear in court to give testimony. Jane was given a subpoena to appear in court and testify against Joe. .
Dogged (adj)- stubborn determination. The dog had dogged determination not to move when the girl told him to. .
namesake (n)- the person one is named after. Many people who are fans of Bear Bryant often use him as a namesake for their child’s name. BEAR BEAR .
Pauper (n/adj)- an extremely poor person. VIDEO Even though Charlie was offered everything by Willy Wonka, he would not give it up for his family and their pauper life. .
cynical (adj.): a cynic is someone who often belittles or makes fun of someone else. Some cynical behavior can be considered bullying if it hurts the person it is aimed at. .
fatalistic(adj.): to accept the event as though it were inevitable; nothing could be done to change or alter it. VIDEO In the movie “Deep Impact,” the characters held a very fatalistic view during their last days. .
vehement (adj.): full of emotion and strong feeling As the teenage son pulled into the driveway at 2 a.m., the father was vehemently telling him he had stayed out past curfew. .
recluse (n.): someone who stays away from society and the company of others The man was a recluse. He never left his house except for Saturday mornings at 7am. .
dispel(v.): to drive away. The dog was able to dispel the man from the home every time he delivered a package. VIDEO .
formidable(adj.): impressive. VIDEO Ron Burgundy believes he is the most formidable man in the world. .
ambidextrous(adj.): able to use both hands with equal ease. When up to bat, Willie was ambidextrous which meant he could use either left or right hand. .
turbulent(adj.): stormy or unruly. Bob Ewell has a turbulent relationship with most people in Maycomb due to his drinking and bad attitude. VIDEO .
chiffarobe(n.): a large cabinet with drawers and a place for hanging clothes. Tom Robinson was asked by Mayella to bust up a chiffarobe for firewood. .
pilgrimage(n.): a long walk. The man made a pilgrimage to his homeland once a year. .
candid(adj.): open and honest. VIDEO The students had no idea there was a camera filming their reactions until the teacher was candid with them about the whole thing in the end. .
