Our Environment • An ecosystem consists of biotic components and abiotic components. The biotic component consists of living organisms while abiotic component consists of physical factors like temperature, rainfall, wind, soil and minerals. The various components of an ecosystem are interdependent. • The organisms can be grouped as producers, consumers and decomposers. All green plants and certain blue green algae produce food by the process of photosynthesis. They are called producers. Organisms depend on the producers either directly or indirectly for sustenance. • In a food chain there is a loss of energy as we go from one trophic level to the next. This limits the number of trophic levels in a food-chain. Various human activities have an impact on the environment. The use of chemicals like CFCs has lead to depletion of ozone layer. • The ozone layer shields the surface of the Earth from the ultraviolet (UV) radiations of the Sun. The UV rays are very harmful to organisms. The waste we generate can be biodegradable or non-biodegradable. The disposal of the waste is a serious environmental problem in today’s era.
