Read the Excerpt from “What to the Slave is the 4th of July” speech by Frederick Douglass on July 5, 1852. Highlight any words that stand out to you, key phrases, or important ideas that Douglass is presenting. • Write about 2-3 sentences at the bottom of the page summarizing it or sharing your thoughts on the reading. • Listen for Mrs. T to ask you to pause from reading to discuss it with a partner.
