Cosmic Ray Composition with SPASE/AMANDA Karen Andeen

Explore the cosmic ray mystery with SPASE/AMANDA, measuring the most energetic particles ever detected. Learn about true vs. reconstructed events, the significance of cuts, and the need for multicomponent measurements. Discover the accurate shower position, direction, energy, and mass of primary cosmic rays.

  1. Cosmic Ray Composition with SPASE/AMANDAKaren Andeen • SPASE and AMANDA • Reconstruction • True vs. Reconstructed Events • Cuts and What They Mean • True vs. Reconstructed Events w/Cuts • Simulated vs. Experimental Events w/Cuts • Conclusions and What's Next?

  2. SPASE/AMANDA SPASE • Cosmic Ray Mystery • Most Energetic Particles ever measured • Don't know origin or how they're accelerated • Unique Coincidence between SPASE/AMANDA • Accurate Shower Position and Direction • Energy and Mass of C.R. Primary measured 12° x=-114.67m y=-346.12m z=1727.91m AMANDA

  3. Reconstruction • Need a multicomponent measurement to obtain primary energy and mass from an air shower • SPASE detects electron component—reconstructs shower direction from arrival times, also reconstructs core position and shower size • AMANDA detects muonic component (as bundles)--reconstructs direction by fixing core position from SPASE and varying zenith and azimuth angles in AMANDA

  4. Sim. SPASE Core Distributions, True vs. Reco

  5. True vs. Reco (con't.)

  6. Cuts R < 60m Zenith < 32° 205° < Azimuth < 290° S(30) > 5m¯² c = Cylinder Size < 1 Cuts and What They Mean D' D H' H c = H'/H = D'/D

  7. True vs. Reco with Cuts

  8. Sim vs. Exp with Cuts

  9. Conclusions and What's Next? • Conclusions: Looks pretty good so far • What's Next? We're waiting on new CORSIKA simulated data from Bartol (what we've used here is MOCCA), hopefully this will look even better. • ????
