Why is it important that everyone uses the same unit of measure? What if your friend measured using a tiny shoe and you used a giant shoe? Would your measurement be the same? Is your FOOT the same as your friend’s FOOT?
About 800 years ago, a King of England decided to standardize measurement. Since most measuring was done using body parts he decided that everyone should use his FOOT as the standard unit of measure. So the size of his FOOT is still used today and it is often called a RULER.
Use the standard FOOT measure to find the length of each picture. Why are your measurements the same as others in your class?
