experiment • We will be investigating how temperature varies as a function of altitude. • Our hypothesis is that the temperature decrease as the altitude increases and furthermore the relationship will be exponential. • In order to test this, we will be sending up our gondola and every one-hundred feet we will stop it for thirty seconds. We will also let the gondola freely ascend and again measure the temperature.
Procedure • First we allowed the balloon to ascend in 100ft. Increments and measured the temperature for 30 seconds. We also recover the balloon in a similar manner. • Next we allowed the balloon to freely ascend for 1000ft and recovered similarly.
Source of Error We measured not only the temperature but also the solar irradiance of the temperature, this should not affect the distribution only at an offset. Our balloon was not directly overhead, so the true altitude is different from the measured value. This affect would tend to reduce the distribution because the balloon is lower.
Conclusion In conclusion our hypothesis was correct, the temperature did decrease as the altitude increased.
