  1. Introduction ShastrijiMaharaj (ShastriYagnapurushdas) founded the Bochasanwasi Shree AksharPurushottamSwaminarayanSanstha in 1907. Through his divine personality, powerful insight, and unflagging effort, he established the Vedic tradition of Bhakta and Bhagwan as preached by Lord Swaminarayan in the SwaminarayanSampradaya. By first installing the murtis of Akshar and Purushottam in the main sanctum of the mandir in Bochasan he fulfilled the dream of Lord Swaminarayan and thus paved the way to eternal moksha.

  2. Faith and FearlessnessOnce, in the middle of night DungarBhaktaundauntingly set out to his farm. Chanting the name of Swaminarayan and a staff in hand he walked through the dark, eerie path. When Dhoribhai saw him arrive alone he asked in surprise, "Weren't you afraid of the ghosts on the way?" DungarBhakta replied bravely! "Had you not said that one who chants the holy name of Swaminarayan is accompanied by Maharaj. So I have brought Maharaj with me."Sometimes when Dhoribhai asked Dungar to help him in farming the land he would reply, "If you talk about God's greatness then I will work and help you in whatever you say."His spiritual inclination was further revealed through his regular visits to the mandir in Vadtal on Ekadashi and Punam.

  3. Signs of ScholarshipThe young DungarBhakta's love for spiritual learning was immense. He was often found reading discarded manuscripts of Vachanamrut on the verandah of the assembly hall.

  4. Renouncing HomeIn 1882, in the month of Magshar, DungarBhakta was permitted to renounce home. With the blessings and good wishes from Dhoribhai and his relatives, DungarBhakta left for Vadtal. On arriving at Surat he prostrated before Vignananand Swami and received his blessings. By the wish of Vignananand Swami, DungarBhakta was enjoined in the services of the mandir. He also began the study of scriptures from his guru.

  5. Daily ChoresDungarBhakta happily became engrossed in his daily chores. During a festival at the Swaminarayanmandir in Vadodara, he got into and scrubbed giant utensils. Many were simply amazed by his spirit of service.

  6. A God-communion GuruPragjiBhakta had arrived in Surat for the consecration ceremony of the murti of GhanshyamMaharaj. Once, he was stitching a cloth and discoursing to an assembly of devotees. Swami Yagnapurushdas was perplexed as to how he could do so many things at the same time. When PragjiBhakta answered his query, Yagnapurushdas was impressed by his divine personality. Then through PragjiBhakta he came to hear about the philosophy of Akshar and Purushottam. Swami Yagnapurushdas was further convinced of this when Vignananand Swami vouched for it.

  7. A Parting PrayerBefore leaving the Vadtalmandir, Swami Yagnapurushdas prayed to the divine murti of Lord HarikrishnaMaharaj: "O Maharaj! I have no desire to leave this mandir, but if it is your wish that I depart, then protect me and always remain with me."

  8. The Historic DepartureWith the strength of God's refuge and the support of a few devotees and five sadhus, Swamishri left Vadtal. For months he travelled to various villages of Gujarat. At Anand, he and a few devotees resolved to build a mandir in Bochasan. Swamishri transformed a notorious criminal, HiraMukhi of Bochasan, into a devotee. With the sole objective of propagating the creed of Akshar and Purushottam, Swamishri celebrated festivals at Sokhada, Chhani, Zadeshwar, Naar, Ahmedabad, Sanjaya, etc.

  9. VictoryIn 1907 (Samvat 1963, VaishakhVad 10), ShastrijiMaharaj performed the first consecration ceremony of the murtis of Akshar and Purushottam in the main shrine of a three-spiredmandir in Bochasan. Amidst jubilant victory cries Swamishri performed the arti of Akshar and Purushottam. It was a landmark event in the annals of the Bochasanwasi Shree AksharPurushottamSwaminarayanSampradaya. A discourse session (parayan) on the Satsangijivan and the first parayan on Swami niVato scripture was held in Bochasan. Swamishri travelled to Sarangpur on the invitation of devotees. The ThakorSaheb of Limbdi donated land for a new mandir in Sarangpur.

  10. The Awesome SarangpurMandirIn spite of difficult times, the beautiful Sarangpurmandir was completed through the cooperation of devotees from Gujarat and Saurashtra and the efforts of Swamishri and sadhus. In 1916 (Samvat 1972, VaishakhSud 6) ShastrijiMaharaj performed the murti-pratishtha ceremony of Akshar, Purushottam and Maha-muktaGopalanand in the main sanctum. Thousands of devotees attended and rejoiced on this occasion.
