What is RSS? – Really Simple Syndication • RSS readers are used to get information feeds for direct presentation, browser presentation or mobile applications • RSS is now available from IBM support and IBM Developerworks, News feeds, magazines, financial tracking sites, & BLOGS • RSS readers allow you to build within 5 minutes, a custom summary of news and information, from multiple sites, even storing content on your local machine (RSS reader features) • RSS is a quick, and easy technology for monitoring new web XML content, through a single client based application • RSS data is delivered as frequently as the providing site desires. This can be hourly, every few hours, or daily. • IBM RSS Help Available!

RSS Readers – early market adopters provide a variety of solutions • A RSS Reader must be downloaded and installed to use this technologybelow is the list, available from the IBM site links • Sharpreader (RSS/Atom Aggregator for Windows) • Pluck (RSS Aggregator IE plugin) • NewsGator (founded RSS Outlook Aggregator) • FeedReader (Feedreader is a lightweight open-source aggregator that supports RSS and ATOM formats) • Awasu (free Windows news-reader, with plug-in enhancements) • Newzcrawler (NewzCrawler is a RSS/atom reader, news aggregator, browser and blog client) • Newsbreak (Mobile Devices - News, Blogs and Info with you wherever you go)

4. How do I find the available RSS feeds? • Check the web page for an orange rectangle, typically listed as XML or RSS IBM Tivoli • From www.ibm.com , select ‘support & downloads’ at the page top • From ‘support by product’, select Software • Locate the button, and click on the link to the right • You now can navigate to any of the Software Group product lists enabled for RSS. • To ‘subscribe’ to a RSS/XML feed, copy the link or XML shortcut to your RSS reader and use the selection option to subscribe. • Some RSS readers, are integrated as browser plug-ins, or will scan a URL for RSS feeds and automatically ask for subscription preferences, so the steps to subscribe from reader to reader vary

RSS – Summary • RSS allows you to monitor a large number of separate web pages or even different sites, without navigating to each one • Provides you with a quick summary of newly posted information • You can review IBM authored support knowledge and developerworks customer exchanges, easily at the same time • The actual data you view is a direct feed with the latest detail. • Better than email, since you don’t need to sort through SPAM • RSS readers can be customized to only display, unread items, to archive data on your machine, and to even provide screen notification as new data is received
