  2. atmosphere • The emotional quality of the world the author creates in a piece of writing. • The author creates emotional qualities of the world. • The author uses it by being descriptive. • He wants us to feel what he’s feeling. • The author creates an atmosphere that develops as the main character’s life develops. • It develops when the kid starts to change his thoughts and feelings.

  3. Characters • Gordon: is the main character of the story and keeps the chest •  Morna: She was Gordons' fiancé. • Mother: Tries to show Gordon all their family memories that were in the chest but Gordon always ignored her. • Father: Gordons' dad and was a football player in the early 1920's

  4. SETTING • The time and place in which the events of a story take place. • In the story it takes place in Pennsylvania in the farm. • It also took place in New England because they moved to a smaller home away from Pennsylvania.

  5. SYMBOL • An object that represents itself and some greater reality than itself. • The chest was like a videotape to the family because back then you couldn’t record important events that you wanted to. Instead they saved their mementos to help future generations see what kind of life was like during their time.

  6. Theme • A main idea expressed in a literary work; a universal message a work may provide about some aspect of life. • I think that the theme of this story is to value old memories. • So you could have things from your generation. • To know about past generations. • To share your memories.
