How to Update Your Web Site Presented by: Leonora Fimbres&Marci Haight February 13, 2002
InsertMore Pictures • Put cursor where you want image to be • Click image button • Click browse button • Find your file • Click open, apply and ok
Inserting Links • Find the link you want to use. Copy it (control + c) or write down the address. • Decide where on your page you want the link and set your cursor there. • In composer, click on the link button on the menu bar. • Enter words to describe link in the top box. (Example: Crayola Web Page for Kids) • Enter link address in second box by pasting (control + v) if you copied or typing in the address. (Example: http://www.crayola.com) • Click APPLY
Adding Pages • In Netscape composer click on new • Design your page • Save it (don’t forget to name it something you can remember) • Go back to your main page in composer and make the link. (See inserting Links) • Click link button • Type in what you want seen on your page • Click browse and find your new page
Adding Pages Continued • Click open and apply • Click preview and test out your link!!
Changing or Deleting a Link • In composer, find the link and right click on it. Find remove link and click on it to remove the link. • After right clicking on the link, choose link properties to change the path of the link. Make necessary changes then click Apply and OK.
Saving to Disk or Hard Drive • Save in two places. Usually C or F (shared) drive along with Floppy or A drive. • Whenever updating, always save to the same file, and click yes when asked if you want to overwrite the file. This will ensure all changes are saved. • You DO NOT need to use a new disk every time you update or make changes to your website. • Always, ALWAYS save regardless of the size of the change. Use the main (C) drive or (F) drive as your main source, and use your disk (A) as a backup and for Mrs. Cox
Now For the Important Part: Updating to the Server! • Right click Start button • Click Explore • Bring up your website folder on the right side. • Click + in front of Network Neighborhood • Click + in front of Hava • Click + in front of HAVA • Click + in front of Web • Click + in front of Web Server Web • Click in front of Public • Click in front of Oro Grande
Updating to Server Continued • Your name should come up. This is the folder you will move your updated file into. Left click your updated material in the right side of your screen (just once!) and drag it over, placing it into your name folder on the left hand side. • A screen will come up asking if you want to replace the old file with the new. Click yes to all. You should see the file transfer taking place. • Now, go to the internet and check your website. You will probably have to hit refresh to see the changes.
Problem Solving Tips for Updating • Make sure your image has been dragged to your name file if it is a new image. Otherwise your image will not show up on the page. • If you have tried everything, ASK FOR HELP! It usually only takes a few minutes to figure out the problem.
Some Reminders • Remember to change your “updated on” date each time you make a change • Check any new links to make sure they work. • Mrs. Cox needs to see your disk each time you update, before it is republished.
