Are WeStill UnderThe Old Law? Question ?
Are We Still Under Old Law? • 2 Cor. 3:5-8- “not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.”
2 Corinthians 3:7-8 • “but if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses, for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away; how shall not the ministration of the spirit rather be glorious.”
Are We Still Under Old Law? • Colossians 2:14- “blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” • Romans 15:4- “for whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and hope of the scriptures might have hope.”
Galatians 3:24,25 • “wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come we are no longer under a schoolmaster.” • Colossians 2:16- “let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbathdays.”
Colossians 2:16 • Holy days- yearly • New Moon- Monthly • Sabbath days-weekly • The old law was done away with at the cross. While there are still principles of truth that are included in the new law, they are not binding because of the Old Law but because Christ authorized them in His new law. The sabbath (7th day) observance is over. The new testament authorizes Sunday as the day of worship to God (Acts 20:7; Acts 2; 1 Cor. 16:2).
Hebrews 9:15 • “and for this cause, He is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.” • Gal. 5:3-4- “for I testify to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”
Preaching Like Jesus Preached
The Sermon On The Mount • Matthew 5:13-16- “you are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing, but to be cast out, and be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Summary Of A Christian • Following the Beatitudes here we have a summation of the characteristics of a Christian life. Christ uses salt and light to describe those who are saved. Only those who are salt and light can help meet the needs of the world spiritually. Salt adds flavoring and also has the property of preserving (Proverbs 13:34- “righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people”).
Summary Of A Christian The light of a Christian is to always shine forth into the darkness of human carnality. Christians are to set it up for all to see not hide it in a corner. Darkness if the absence of light and darkness alone cannot dispel light----but the smallest light can dispel the greatest darkness. We have great power!
Descriptions Of Christians 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
Descriptions Of Christians 1 Peter 4:2-4 “he should no longer live in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to eh will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries; wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you.”
Fruit of The Spirit Gal. 5:22-24 “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”
Christian Graces 2 Peter 1:4-7 “ and beside this, giving all diligence add to your faith, virtue, and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience godliness; and godliness brotherly kindness-love.”
Fighting The Good Fight • 1 Timothy 6:12 “fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life…” Christians are to fight against error and wrong. They are to wage a good warfare against Satan (1 Tim. 1:18,19 “…war a good warfare, holding faith, and a good conscience…”). • 2 Cor. 10:4 “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal”
Christ & The Old Law • Matthew 5:17,18 “think not that I came to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say to you till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled.” Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law. When he was dying he said, “it is finished” (Jn. 19:30). These were His last words. The law convinced men of the need for the Messiah (The Seed- Gen. 12).
Christ & The Old Law • Verses 19,20- “whoever does not teach what the law is all about (salvation through the Seed), shall be least in the kingdom.” • Jesus now demonstrates that true righteousness is not self-righteous and an outward show. He demonstrates this in the next verses by drawing contrasts between outward behavior demanded by the law and the inner attitude of the heart desired by God.
The Law Says: “thou shalt not kill” ( Mt. 5:21; Ex. 20:13). Involves the act of murder. But I say (Mt. 5:22ff)- “whoever is angry with his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, whoever says Raca, will be in danger of the council Sanhedrin), whoever says, you fool (useless one), will be in danger of hell fire (Gehenna). Get things right before you come offer anything to God (Mt. 5: 23-26).
Jesus Believes In Hell Matt. 5:22; 29; 30; 10:28; 13:42; 18:8,9; 23:15,33; 25:41,46; Luke 12:5. There is an eternal hell (Gehenna) Just as there is everlasting life, there is eternal hell. Christ spoke of this more than anyone in the whole Bible. Those who do not obey His law will be doomed to spend eternity there. This is clear teaching.
Jesus Opposes Adultery The Old Law Says- “thou shalt not commit adultery” (Mt. 5:27; Ex. 20:14). BUT I SAY- “whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery already in his heart; and if your right eye ( or hand) offends, pluck it out, it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish than for your whole body be cast into hell.”
The Lustful Look • Responsibility of all not to put occasions to stumble before others (Rom. 14:13;Mt. 18:6). • Immodesty (the way one dresses) • Must be modest (1 Tim. 2:9). • Not a cause for divorce, but can lead to adultery which is the only cause for divorce. • The lustful look is uncleanness and condemned by God in Gal. 5:19- “the works of the flesh are known which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness”
Gal. 5:19- Progressive Sin • “Gr. Porneia, sin within a specified area of life, particularly sexual relationships. • “Gr. Akatharsia-general defilement of the whole personality, tainting every sphere of life, still wants to hide sin and is ashamed of it, but unwilling to stop. • “Gr. Aselgia- a love of sin so reckless that one has ceased to care what God or anyone else has to say about it. It is a shocking of public decency and an utter disregard for what anyone thinks about it. Greedy to practice all sorts of evil and unashamed as to who knows it. Utterly self-absorbed, no decency, no self-respect or sense of shame.
All Leading To Adultery • Jesus says that when one looks on a woman to lust after her he has committed adultery already in his heart. This is sin. It is also sin to attract such looks from a man or a woman. • Decent people should not want to attract the sexual desires of anyone but their spouse. Fathers should not want anyone to desire their unmarried daughter sexually, nor should any decent young person want to evoke such looks and thoughts from anyone. • Our world says the opposite.
Dangers To Marriages • Epidemic in our country. Brazen women and men prowling on the internet. • Pornography just a click away. • Pre-marital sex not the exception but the rule with many young people. • Virginity until marriage mocked. • All of these eat away at the marriage relationship God intended.
