Made in 1985 in Hong Kong • Jackie Chan stars as Chan Ka Kui • Also Directed and all stunt coordinated by him as well. • Also has starred in the “Rush Hour” movies • Did this project after bad experience with a director on the movie “The Protector” • Won best film award at the 1986 Hong Kong Film Awards • Chan considers this his best in terms of action • Chan was hospitalized after the stunt where he flips over the balcony and crashes through the glass and light display, he wasn’t breathing. • Used stunt “sugar glass” twice as thick as ordinary for realism. Led to higher rate of injuries.
Chan sustained burns on his hands during the pole slide stunt in the mall. • So much glass was used crew called it “Glass Story” • Reason movie is called the rather plain, “Police Story”, is because everytime Chan started a new project in Hong Kong everyone else followed with their own similar project. • At this time no one had made a Hong Kong police films only kung fu type movies. • When the vilians crash through the window of the bus onto the ground it was an accident. They were supposed to fall onto the car but because of the air brakes on the bus there was a pump back.
The Mall pole stunt nearly paralyzed Chan. He nearly broke his seventh and eight vertebrae. He also dislocated his pelvis (Dr.’s didn’t know this was possible). • They built the shanty town in the opening sequence for the car chase. • The mall pole was only shot once. The mall had to be cleaned and ready for the next morning so the crew was rushed. • The umbrella that Chan uses for a fight scene was a metal one because the wooden one kept breaking. This made the fight more dangerous. • Grossed HK $26 million • Spawned four sequels and a remake.
All fight scenes, as in most kung fu movies, were shot at half speed and then played at full speed to appear real but be safe when shooting. • Shanty Town chase – Similar use in Bad Boys II • Brandon Lee was a fan of Chan and paid homage to him in his film Rapid Fire. • Chan stopping bus – Similar scene in Stallone movie Tango and Cash • Police Story theme song, used in Hong Kong TV Series Police Report, sung by Jackie Chan. • Jackie Chan conferred the Silver Bauhinia Star in 1999 by the Hong Kong Administrative Region. A very high honor.
In addition to singing here he has released albums in Asia. • Jackie’s idols are Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. This is why his films have a comedic feel to them .
