  2. WHAT IS A GOAL? • A goal is something you aim for that takes planning and work. • Short term goals: less than 3 months • Intermediate: 3 months – 1 year • Long term goals: 1 year or more

SMART GOALS • SPECIFIC: EXACTLY what do you want? • MEASURABLE: How will you MEASURE it so you know that you have succeeded? • ATTAINABLE: Is this something that YOU could really achieve? • REALISTIC: What are steps that YOU could take to REALISTICALLY make it happen? • TIME BOUND: WHEN will it happen?

  4. Example of a goal turned SMART • I want to buy a prom dress. (prom dress is SPECIFIC) • I want to buy a $330.00 prom dress. ($330.00 is MEASURABLE) • I want to buy a $330.00 prom dress so I am going to save money from my job. (saving money helps to make it ATTAINABLE) • I want to buy a $330.00 prom dress so I am going to save $85.00 a month from my ob. ($85.00 a month makes it REALISTIC) • I want to buy a $330.00 prom dress so I am going to save $85.00 a month from my job for the next four months. (four months makes it TIME BOUND)

  5. ACTION PLAN:a multi-step strategy for identifying and achieving goals 1. SELECT A GOAL TO WORK ON: • In selecting a goal, you need to be specific and realistic. State our goals as something positive. Focus your energies on succeeding….not failing.

  6. ACTION PLAN:A multi-step strategy for identifying and achieving goals. 2. LIST WHAT YOU WILL DO TO REACH THE GOAL: * Look for ways to break your goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks. If your goal is to become a long distance runner, start with short distances.

REWARD YOURSELF AFTER REACHING YOUR GOAL: * Once you have achieved your goal enjoy personal satisfaction, congratulate yourself. Treat yourself to something – i.e. buy something you want. A reward will help you get to the end.
