  3. Activity 1 • Look at the statements A, B ,C and D • Rank them in order with the most important first from the perspective of: - yourself - the Vice Chancellor/senior management - any staff involved in international activities

  4. Activity 2 • Match each of the statements A,B,C and D with one of the following: • Economic • Academic • Political • Social

Statements and types • Statement A – PRESTIGE My institution is concerned with enhancing its international profile and reputation as a world class institution • Statement B – ACADEMIC My institution is concerned with ensuring a global outlook permeates all areas of academic activity – from research to the curriculum • Statement C- ECONOMIC My institution is concerned with generating significant income from international resources • Statement D – SOCIAL My institution is concerned with equipping all its students and staff (and the institution itself) to make an effective and informed contribution in a world where borderless careers and cross-cultural interaction are the norm

  6. Results from BUILA survey • 42% return (122 institutions) • Political 30% • Academic 12% • Economic 38.5% • Social 19.5%

  7. Case studies (guess which institution!) • “Prestige Player”: PSEA • “Economic Wizard”: EPSA • “Global Citizen”: SAEP

Issues to consider from case studies • Importance of prestige but with overseas campuses the implications are…… • Importance on raising income (25%) but emphasis on a truly international curriculum….. • An atypical approach and “cross-cultural capability” has to be built in….. • Divergence between public face and internal buy-in…. • Importance of “abroad” or “at home” activities…. • Role of VC or “champion”……

  9. Where next? • Impact of “Graduate Attributes” and “Graduates for the 21st century”? • Employability – marketing tool? • Burden or opportunity for staff? • Influence of educational developers?
