JM’s 4th Annual 5-a-side Charity Football Tournament11th August 2006 Final Score
Match reports 10 teams, 63 players, 1 prize and a cheque for £1000 to the winning team’s charity of choice…something had to give. The tournament kicked off with 2 leagues of 5 teams with the top 4 in each group going through to the knockout stage. Pool 1 - Defending champions JM1 fittingly led off proceedings in pool 1 with a 1-0 victory against the mighty Dutch, ABN Amro. Pool 1 was a tight affair with a poultry 1.5 goals average a game with T-Mobile and Munich Re emerging unbeaten to be joined by JM1 and Mizuho in the knockout stage. Pool 2 – Nicknamed the Brazilian league, Pool2 averaged 3.8 goals a game with the early favourites Morgan Stanley leading a clean sweep and conceding only 2 goals to a lively HSBC in the group decider. Mizuho B and Digby Morgan filling the final slots in the quarters with the latter coming from 3-0 down to win 4-3 in an eliminator with JM2. Quarters – The form sides, T-Mobile and Morgan Stanley swept through to the semis with 4 goal winning margins joined by Munich Re who squeezed past an injury hit Mizuho B by a solitary goal. The final game saw the defending champions JM1 crash out in a penalty shoot out to HSBC with the keeper stepping up to score the winning goal. Semis – T-mobile utilising their full squad were too strong for HSBC putting 4 past them to one conceded and were joined in the final by Munich RE who having shut out Morgan Stanley prevailed 3-2 in the penalty shoot out. Final – A nervy game with neither side wanting to give an inch, the Number 1 attacking side verses the tightest defence in the league. T-mobile took the lead through a well worked goal and than sat back to defend their slender lead as the light blues pushed for an equaliser. The Munich RE strikers just couldn’t find the net and T-Mobile held on to be crowned Champions !
