NPO • N/V, Pre-op, Post-op • Foods = none
Clear liquid • N/V; Post-op; Diarrhea • Short term • Foods = liquid at room temp.; clear • Ex – apple juice, Sprite, popsicle, Jell-O, chicken broth
Full Liquid • Successfully held down clear liquids • Short term • Foods = all clear liquids plus milk based liquids • Ex – cream soups, milk, yogurt (liquid)
Soft • Digestive issues; can’t tolerate seasoned/spicy foods • Foods = Soft in texture • Ex – eggs, soft bread, noodles, fish, cheese
Regular • Pt. with no food restrictions • Well balanced • Foods = all foods permitted
Calorie Control • Overweight; Medical condition (heart disease, kidney disease) • Foods = Portions are smaller • Ex – No fried foods, no butter, avoid processed sugar, cheeses, fatty meats
Diabetic Diet • Diabetes • Foods = free of processed sugar; limit amt. of carb’s • Ex – Avoid • Sugar packets • Jellies / jams • Sweets
Mechanical Diet • Patients with chewing / swallowing problem • Solid foods are blended to consistency of thick baby food
Low • Patients with heart disease, kidney disease, HBP, Gallbladder disease • Low sodium • Low fat • Low cholesterol • Foods = lean meats, fresh vegetables/fruits, avoid butter, sweets, fatty meats, potato chips, pickles, high fat dairy products
