Fractions and Cookies • Without a doubt, my Mom makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world and I’d use any excuse to make them (even a Math class). • Our task today is to successfully double or triple the recipe and still produce the same great cookies!! • This activity practices using fractions.You can use any recipe for great practice in fractions.

  3. 1 cup margarine 3/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 TBSP water 1 tsp vanilla 1 & 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 2/3 to 1 cup rolled oats 3/4 cup chocolate chips Single Batch

  4. The Task…….. • We don’t want to make just one batch of cookies, we want to double or triple the batch because these are GOOD cookies!! So how much of each ingredient do we need? • Choose whether you want to double or triple the batch and figure out the appropriate amount for each ingredient you will need.

  5. 2 cups margarine 1 & 1/2 cups white sugar 1 & 1/2 cups brown sugar 2 eggs 2 TBSP water 2 tsp vanilla 3 cups flour 2 tsp salt 2 tsp baking soda 1 & 1/3 to 2 cups rolled oats 1 & 1/2 cups chocolate chips Double Batch

  6. 3 cups margarine 2 & 1/4 cups white sugar 2 & 1/4 cups brown sugar 3 eggs 3 TBSP water 3 tsp vanilla 4 & 1/2 cups flour 3 tsp salt 3 tsp baking soda 2 to 3 cups rolled oats 2 & 1/4 cup chocolate chips Triple Batch

  7. To Begin … • Preheat oven to 350 • Make sure you have all of your ingredients • Get 2 mixing bowls, measuring cups, measuring spoons and a wooden spoon

  8. Let’s Bake! • Cream softened margarine and sugars together until blended • Add egg(s), vanilla and water and blend until smooth

  9. In a separate bowl combine the flour, salt, and baking soda Slowly add this mixture to wet ingredients and mix just until blended Add rolled oats Add chocolate chips ( you can add a few extra if you want!) Next Step...

  10. Almost There...… • Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet • Bake for 8-12 minutes • Cool on racks (if you can stand it)

  11. Dig In! • Pour yourself a nice big glass of milk and enjoy your cookies • Bet you can’t just eat one!!

  12. Your assignment... • It’s Sunday, the grocery stores are closed and you don’t have enough ingredients to make an entire batch. How much do you need to make a half batch? • Bring your recipe for half a batch of Mom’s Chocolate Chip Jumbles next day.
