Present System of Verbs • Three tenses of verbs are formed using the present stem of verbs: • Present • Imperfect (Past) • Future • To find the stem, look at the 2nd principle part, then take off the –re.
Imperfect Tense • Add –bā– between the present stem and the personal endings. Except: • 1stsg: -ba- • 3rdsg/pl: -ba-
Imperfect Tense • The imperfect tense describes a past action which is incomplete. • It is repeated, habitual, or continuous action in the past. • The most common way to translate is to use “was _____ing” and “were ____ing.” • You can also use “used to _____” and “kept on _____ing.”
Future Tense • Add –bi– between the present stem and the personal endings. • -bō- instead of -bi- : 1stsg • -bu- instead of -bi- : 3rdpl
Future Tense • The future tense describes an action that will be completed. • The most common way to translate is to use “will _____” or “shall _____.”
