Islamic Pirates • Invaded the Charlemagne Empire in the 8th century • Muslims took over northern Africa and most of Spain • Muslim princes captured small amounts of land with their fleets • These princes overtook most of the western Mediterranean • They captured Italy in 827 A.D. and drove the Byzantines out • This slowed trade across all of Europe
Magyars Magyars invaded north Italy and south Germany in the 9th Century, contributing to the decline of central authority, disrupting trade, hurting agriculture, and destroying settlements and monasteries. The Magyars fought on horseback, which led to Europeans fighting on horseback. The Magyars led to an increase in feudalism and a decline in monarchs' power.
