Learning Objective:To know how a country’s level of development can affect the impact of earthquakes • Title: How does development affect the level of impact of earthquakes
Questions to consider • 1. How can we work out how developed a country is? How can we tell if it is an More Economically Developed Country (MEDC) or a Less Economically Developed Country (LEDC)? • What statistics can we used to decide whether a country is an LEDC or MEDC?
Activity • Use the development statistics to work out what level of development each country is at. Write either LEDC or MEDC into the correct place. • Explain how you decided whether the country was an LEDC/MEDC. • Is there a relationship between the level of development a country is at and the impact of earthquakes? – share your findings • Why do you think this relationship exists? Go into as much detail as you can and give reasons for the points you make.
Extension • Write a report to the United Nations explaining the requirements of LEDCs to cope with earthquakes. • Points to consider: • What should the Governments do to reduce the impacts of earthquakes? • What can the population do to reduce the impact of earthquakes? • What can other countries do to help reduce the impact of earthquakes?
