Red Alder • Common Name: Red Alder • Scientific Name: Alnus rubra • Broadleaf • Leaf shape: They are oval and usually 7-15 cm long. They have blunt edges and a distinct point at the end. It is distinguished by the curled under edge. Leaves turn yellow in the fall before falling. • Bark: ashy gray and smooth. • Flower: The male flowers are dangling reddish catkins, 10-15 cm long. Female flowers are catkins that develop into small, woody cone-like oval dry fruit. • Fruit: The female flowers, they are dry and oval and can be 2-3 cm long. • Seed Dispersal: seeds fall off and are lightweight so they can be carried hundred of yards by the wind. • Native? Yes! They are natives to the northwest.
