What is Tidal Energy? Tidal Energy is a form of hydro power that converts the energy from the natural rise and fall of the tides, into electricity. Energy is converted through tidal plants that are installed along coastlines.
Ways to Generate Tidal Energy Tidal Barrages Tidal Fences Tidal Turbines
How Do Tidal Barrages Work? • A tidal barrage is a dam that utilizes the potential energy generated by the change in height between high and low tides • A Tidal barrage turns a turbine or compresses air, which in turn creates electricity.
How Do Tidal Fences Work? • Tidal fences force the currents through a blaze • The blaze rotates • ELECTRICITY is created Tidal fences can be compared to giant turnstiles
How Do Tidal Turbines Work? • Mechanical energy of tidal currents turns turbines connected to a generator • ELECTRICITY is created Tidal turbines operate like underwater wind turbines
Positive Impacts • Ocean water is 832 times more dense than air; applies greater force on the turbines. • Easy to install and renewable • NO greenhouse gas emissions • Predictable energy source • Effective at low speeds and long lasting
Negative Impacts • Harmful to marine life as it damages their ecosystem when installed • Doesn’t work well in bad weather • Barrages are very loud • Negative impact on the ocean • Close to shore • Intermittent (only produces electricity during tidal surges)
Solution The negative impacts that tidal power creates can be solved with: • Barrages that can work farther from land (not so close to shore) • Smaller underwater turbines that are quieter and cost efficient
What Does the Future Hold? NEW TECHNOLOGY! AN EARTH WITHOUT SO MANY GREENHOUSE GASES! ELECTRIC CARS AND NEW SOURCES TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY (TIDAL POWER)!
