Where is the Basic Income Movement Now? And what’s the best way to plug in locally?
Are There Any Established Basic Incomes? Alaska Permanent Fund - A resource dividend. Bolsa Familia in Brazil - Only for poor families. California: Climate Credit / Carbon Share? US 1990s Tax Bill - Way too small. Recent Van Hollen Cap & Dividend - Not Moving.
Local Bills: Messaging / Endorse These are all recent! (Except for GPUS) Kingston, Ontario, Canada Canadian Medical Association Green Party US Pending Democratic State Parties Washington & Minnesota
Can we pass a Basic Income via Referendum? In Switzerland Yes! It’s estimated be about 40% in favor but it does have momentum. In the US sort of: States and Cities that have referendums such as California, DC, Baltimore? But in my city of Baltimore referendums are very weak and require a lot of signatures for ballot access. YMMV in your state, county and city.
Crowdfunded “Pilots” First some awesome Germans did this: https://www.mein-grundeinkommen.de/start Then some advocates in Silicon Valley held this: http://www.universalincome.org/ And made this: http://mybasicincome.org/ Press follows the “crowdfunding” at every turn: http://www.dw.com/en/free-money-germanys-basic-income-lottery/a-18764779 http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/09/basic-income-createathon/ https://mic.com/articles/125420/basic-income-studies-higher-minimum-wage-and-living-wage-creative-renaissance#.1OeleLu18 http://www.basicincome.org/news/2015/11/first-basic-income-create-a-thon-in-san-francisco-is-a-great-success/
The point of the crowdfunded project is to bring awareness & get press. You see Montreal & Finland holding them now: https://www.reddit.com/r/BasicIncome/comments/47nwn7/finland_to_organise_its_first_basic_income/ Right before the votes and pilots.
In the US: Silicon Valley (Crowdfunded Lottery) vs Feminist / Anti-Poverty In Canada: Technocratic Economists vs Social Workers RE: Canadian Pilots BEWARE: There are technocrats and napkin economists out there who don’t see this as a human rights issue. Can’t afford it / My Way or I’m out argument. As Karl Widerquist Says, We need BOTH. The pilots and the Universal Basic Income Now movement together.
