Characteristics of South Carolina Dental Work Force Mohammad Yalmaz Ali MD MPH Oral Health Division/MCH Bureau South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control South Carolina Sixth Annual Oral Health Forum
Topics to be discussed today • Discuss both dentists and dental hygienists population • Race and age breakdown (Urban vs. Rural counties). Def. Of rural and Urban • Dentist to population ratio (Urban vs. Rural counties) • Participation (FTE vs. total practicing) • Some predictions and concerns. Data source for this discussion is SC Office of Research and Statistics
Dentists • 2005 Total number of dentists – 1839 Racial Breakdown
Dentist to 100,000 population ratio • A total of 1839 dentists for a population of 4,225,083 (2005 estimate) • A dentist to population ratio of 43.2 dentists/100,000 population • Rural counties have about 29.8 dentists/100,000 population • Urban counties have about 48.4 dentist/100,000 population.
Dentist/100,000 pop. 9.7 - 17.8 17.9 - 29.7 29.8 - 38.9 39.0 - 47.6 47.7 - 85.4 ishwy arc Dentist to 100,000 population by county
Dentists distribution within counties • The distribution within some of the counties are even more skewed than the distribution among counties (Three examples). • Charleston county – 55% of the population lives in Charleston and North Charleston Cities but about 74% of the dentists practice in these cities. • Richland county – Columbia pop. 1/3rd of the county – 94% of total dentists in the county. • Orangeburg county – Orangeburg city contains 14% of the pop. – 74% of the dentists practice in the city.
Participation of dentists • FTE’s (Full time equivalents) is a good measure for participation of dentists in their respective county. • It is probably a good measure of “need” because a county may have adequate number of dentists but still have shortage because number of FTE’s working are not enough.
FTE’s / 100,000 population • Total FTE’s – 1417.5 – 33.3 FTE’s /100,000 pop. • Urban counties – 1159.9 – 37.7 FTE’s /100,000 population • Rural counties 257.6 – 21.8 FTE’s /100,000 • Participation ratio = FTE’s /Total practicing dentists – Ratio = 1 means all dentists are full time
Participation ratio of dentists 0.43 - 0.58 0.59 - 0.70 0.71 - 0.78 0.79 - 0.85 0.86 - 0.95 Participation ratio by county
Dentists FTE's/100,000 9.2 - 15.7 15.8 - 22.0 22.1 - 28.1 28.2 - 37.7 37.8 - 62.0 FTE’s 100,000 population
Participation by age group • About 9% of the dental work force is more than > 65 years of age.
% FTE provided by dentists >65 yrs age 0.0 - 3.7 3.8 - 9.7 9.8 - 16.5 16.6 - 22.7 22.8 - 43.5 % of FTE’s provided by dentists >65 yrs of age
Hygienists • In 2005 – 1883 total practicing hygienists in South Carolina
Hygienist to population ratio • 1883 hygienists for 4,255,083 people • State - 44.2/100,000 pop • Urban counties – 50.9/100,000 pop • Rural counties – 27.1/100,000 pop
Hygienists distribution within counties • Similar patterns existed for Hygienists (as expected) – 3 examples • Greenville city – 13% of county’s population but 68% of hygienists work • Orangeburg city – 13% of county’s pop but 77% of the work force. • Columbia city – 34% of the county’s population but contains 90% of the hygiene population
FTE’s / 100,000 population • 1312.1 FTE – 30.9 FTE Hygienists/100,000 population • Urban counties – 35.1 FTE/100,000 population • Rural Counties – 19.8 FTE/100,000 population • Participation ratio = FTE’s /Total practicing Hygienists– Ratio = 1 means all hygienists are full time
FTE/Total dentist ratio 0 - 0.33 0.34 - 0.67 0.68 - 0.75 0.76 - 0.83 0.84 - 0.90 Participation ratio
FTE/100,000 pop. 4.7 - 9.9 10.0 - 17.9 18.0 - 26.3 26.4 - 34.6 34.7 - 44.9 FTE’s / 100,000 population by county
Urban and Rural definition • Counties with town larger than 25,000 individuals • Urban counties – Aiken, Anderson, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Pickens, Florence, Greenville, Horry, Lexington, Richland, Spartanburg, Sumter, York
