XenData Digital Archive Software Video Performance. Based on IT Standards August 2010
XenData: Proven Digital Video Archive Solution • XenData software creates digital archives ideal for professional video applications: • local TV stations e.g. KVIE • major service providers e.g. Crawford • major broadcasters e.g. BBC • post production houses e.g. Modern Videofilm • XenData now has over 300 installations in • the media and entertainment sector.
XenData: Proven Digital Video Archive Solution Software • Broadcast installations with MAM, automation & monitoring systems include : • Final Cut • Server
XenData Software Basics
Interface: • Standard Windows File System • The XenData software virtualizes the RAID and tapes, • presenting them as a magnetic disk: + =
Data Tape – the Preferred Archival Medium A LTO-5 tape library is preferred for large capacity, high performance digital video archives.
Single & Multiple Server Video Archives • XenData software now supports single and multiple server archives: • Single Server: X64 & X32 Editions • Runs on a single Windows Server • Suitable for archiving many TBs per day • Multiple Server: MX64 Edition • Runs on multiple Windows Servers • Provides high transfer rates • Tapes are fully interchangeable with single server solution
Example Single Server Configuration Windows Server running XenData software Tape Library RAID High speed LAN
Example Multiple Server Configuration Master Server: Windows Server running XenData software 3 Datamover Servers Master Server connects To the Datamovers via Private network Multi-Petabyte Tape Library Medium Changer LTO drives connect to datamovers High speed LAN
XenData Compatibility: • Supports Leading Tape Formats • LTO-5, LTO-4, LTO-3. LTO-2 (IBM & HP tape drives) • SAIT-2, SAIT-1, AIT-5, AIT-4, AIT-3, AIT-2 (Sony)
XenData Compatibility: • Supports Wide Range of Tape Libraries • Dell • HP • IBM • Rorke • Oracle Storagetek • Overland • Qualstar • Quantum • Sony • Spectra Logic
XenData Software Functionality
Interface: • Standard Windows File System • All managed tapes and the disk cache are virtualized as one standard Windows logical drive letter. • The Windows offline attribute identifies when a file is no longer on disk cache. This prevents network timeouts.
Interface: Standard Windows File System The XenData software creates a single logical drive locally which may be shared as one or more network shares. Advantage: the archive may have multiple uses without need for special interface software, for example: ► Archive for MAM ► P2 Raw Footage Archive ► Archive for FCP users
File group Rules for OS X Clients • Automatically implements file group rules for • Management of Resource Fork files and .DS_Store files. • Mac clients are automatically supported.
Strong Adherence to Standards: • Standard Tape Format • XenData software writes to the data tapes in industry standard TAR format. This means that files may be read with third party utilities.
Strong Adherence to Standards: • Standard Security • XenData software adheres to the standard Microsoft security model based on Active Directory.
Hierarchical Storage Management: • XenData Supports Three HSM Tiers • Onlinerefers to files in disk cache. Policies determine how long files are retained online. • Nearlinerefers to files on a tape within a library or in a stand-alone drive. • Offlinerefers to files held on tapes on the shelf.
HSM and Offline Files: • Offline Files • When a file is no longer on disk or on a tape within a library or stand-alone drive, it is offline. However, XenData software maintains offline files in the file system. If there is an attempted access of an offline file, the XenData Alert Module will identify which tape should be inserted into a drive or library to bring it back to nearline status. Notification is via on-screen messages or email alerts.
Data Protection: • Tape Cartridge Replication • Tape cartridge duplicates are generated automatically, creating a copy for offsite retention.
Data Protection: • Rapid Restore of File System • XenData’s metadata backup program provides a rapid restore of the system in case of total disaster or RAID failure.
Additional Software Features: • Supports Multiple Tape Sets • The Administrator may allocate groups of files or folders to specific groups of tapes. • Consequently, related files can be grouped together on the same set of tapes.
Additional Software Features: • Partial Restore based on Byte Offset • File fragmentation allows rapid restore of a portion of a file.
Additional Software Features: • Configurable Disk Retention • The Administrator may configure the disk retention policy by folder and/or file type.
Data Transfer: • Easy export from one system and import to another • Each full tape contains a tape catalog that provides rapid import of file contents to another file system. A tape may be finalized at any time, creating the tape catalog and preventing additional writing to the tape.
Tape Cartridge Repack: • Allows Recovery of Space from Deleted Files • The administrator is able to repack a tape which causes all current files (i.e. excluding files that are deleted or are old versions) to be re-written. The original tape is then shown as quarantined, ready for reformat. • First check Tape Volume • Statistics to determine • space that Repack would • recover.

Explorer Extensions – Smart Copy & Paste • Allows Optimized Restore • Files are restored in tape order.
Explorer Extensions – Pre-fetch • Files are transferred to disk cache • Files are pre-fetched to disk and restored in tape order.
Explorer Extensions – Flush • Allows rapid flushing of files from disk • Files stored on both disk and tape may • be rapidly flushed from disk cache.
Tape Cartridge Contents Reports: • Provides Tape Cartridge Contents • This is new functionality introduced with version 5. The contents are available for all tapes including those on the shelf. The results may be imported • into Excel.
Additional Software Features: • Alert Module • Included without additional charge • Provides on-screen notification • provides Email alerts
