What is Euthanasia? • "The painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma." • also referred to as doctor assisted suicide and medical killing. • Between 0.3% and 4.6% of all deaths are euthanasia's in jurisdictions where they are legal
Our Claim Euthanasia and doctor assisted suicide can have both a positive and negative impact on the patient, their family, and the doctor.
Legalizing euthanasia would help alleviate suffering of terminally ill patients • It would be inhumane and unfair to make them endure the unbearable pain • In a study of Unbearable suffering and requests for euthanasia in end-of-life cancer patients in primary care by Dr. ruijs, 88% of patients in the study suffered unbearable symptoms, showing that most patients undergo euthanasia because of the pain. • Taking this option away from patients would leave many in the hospital to live miserably and die slowly 1st positive
Euthanasia provides a choice to all people, including those who are not currently eligible to be euthanized • It relieves people from the fear of a long, painful death, for they know that they can choose to be euthanized • You have the right to make your own decision • Patients aren't choosing to die they're choosing how they die and see it as Dying with dignity 2nd positive
1st negative • All doctors are required to take the Hippocratic Oath which entails that they do no harm, provide care for the sick and not play god. • Euthanasia contradicts the whole idea of doctors promoting/saving lives. • Many doctors don’t have the heart to knowingly let a patient take their life • The American College of Physicians organized 152,000 medical professionals, in 2017, who stood against the legalization of physician-assisted suicide and they released this official statement: “the practice of which raises ethical, clinical, and other concerns. Control over the manner and timing of a person’s death has not been and should not be a goal of medicine,” the group concluded.
2nd negative • “Patients may be influenced or not in the right state of mind • Terminally ill patients tend to suffer from depression --> increase their willingness to die • Psychological testing should be done to consider whether the individual is ready to make this decision • Cases have been reported where the family has influenced their decision in return for personal gain (life insurance policy or will) • About 900 people annually are administered lethal substances without having given explicit consent, and in one jurisdiction, almost 50% of cases of euthanasia are not reported.
Conclusions POSITIVES NEGATIVES Contradicts the Hippocratic Oath Patients could possibly not be in the right state of mind or be swayed and make the wrong choice when deciding • Relieves the suffering of terminally ill patients • Provides a choice to those who are not eligible to be euthanized QUALIFY
