3. What Makes an Armadillo • Armadillos are a group of animals that originated in South America. • Armadillos are mammals. Their closest living relatives are sloths and anteaters. • They are most easily recognised by their shell. • They rely on speed or their digging ability to escape danger. • They eat snakes, carrion, insects, spiders, small amphibians, termites, worms, larvae, plants, roots, beetles, ants, fruit, seeds and snails

4. TYPES OF ARMADILLO

5. Nine-banded Armadillo Nine-banded Armadillos are found in America and Africa. They can be from 365mm to 1 metre 56mm in length. They are distinguished by their long nose and 9 bands on their back.

6. Six-banded Armadillo The six-banded armadillo lives around Africa, Argentina and Brazil. It can be from 520mm to 736mm in length. They are distinguished by the six bands on their back and are yellow to reddish brown in colour.

7. Three-Banded Armadillo The three-banded armadillo lives in Brazil. It can grow from 278mm to 353mm. They are distinguished by the 3 bands on their back and are blackish-brown in colour. They are also the only armadillos that can curl up into a ball.

8. Giant Armadillo • The giant armadillo lives in South America, Argentina + Venezuela. It can be from 1m 25cm to 1m 50cm. It is distinguished by its massive size and huge claw which is about 203 mm. It is the biggest armadillo species.

9. Pink Fairy Armadillo • The pink fairy armadillo lives in Central Argentina. It is 111mm to 152 mm in length. It is distinguished by its’ pink shell and miniscule size.

10. Dwarf Armadillo • The dwarf armadillo (also known as pichi) lives in Argentina and Chile. They are 360 to 475mm long. They are distinguished by their dark brown shell, small ears and something that looks like a helmet.
