BACKGROUND • ORIP prioritizes research innovation • Strategies to attain this include training research champions, mentoring young faculty and facilitating faculty, and students carry out research • Availing Competitive grants is humble beginning in the facilitation process.
COMPETITIVE GRANTS SIZE • Seven grants will be funded. • A maximum of USD 8,000 is proposed to support each grant
CALL FOR PROPOSALS • Call for Proposals to be announced by end of April 2014 • Submission date- 31st May 2014 • Review of proposals- 1st June- 15th July 2014 • Announce successful bidders- 16th July 2014 • Award of grants- 31st July 2014 • Implementation of successful proposal- August 2014
DRAFT GRANT AWARD GUIDELINES • To be undertaken at two levels- Secretariat level and ORIP Advisory Committee level • Secretariat Level: • Analyze content of proposal and check for completeness • Document manage conflict of interest • Identify qualified reviewers • FINER – an approach suggested for public health research and evaluation • F – feasible • I – interesting • N – novel • E – ethical • R - relevant • Panel discussion-One Health research competencies - priorities and gaps
DRAFT GRANT AWARD GUIDELINES 2 • Assign applications to reviewers – three weeks before review meeting • ORIP Advisory Committee level: • Submit review report to ORIP Advisory Committee-3rd July 2014 • Final report- 15th July 2014
PROPOSED REVIEW CRITERIA • Significance of the proposal: • Does the proposal address an important issue or a critical barrier to progress in the field of study • If the aims of the research are achieved, how will the body of knowledge and technical capacity be improved?
PROPOSED REVIEW CRITERIA 2 • Investigators’ expertise • Innovation • Approach • Is the overall strategy methodology and analyzes well reasoned and appropriate?
PROPOSED REVIEW CRITERIA 3 • Environment • Will environment in which the research will be implemented contribute to probability of successes • Is there institutional support?
PROPOSED REVIEW CRITERIA 4 • Almost all serious investigations in OH require an integrated group with multiple complementary skills. Don’t be intimidated by lacking a skill • Must choose appropriate collaborators who complement your skills, and strengthen the proposal, even if it means less money for everyone. .
