What is geography? • Geography is the study of the earth and the ways people live and work on it; the study of the way places on the earth differ and the ways people organize themselves and use the earth’s resources; it also deals with the location of these places and the complex relationships between people and their environments.
Warm-up: List the 5 themes of geography
Location: “Where is it?” • Absolute location: the precise location on the globe • Longitude and Latitude • Relative Location: places in relation to other places
Human features: The number and kinds of people that live there, activities, religions, languages and cultural backgrounds. Physical features: Land, water, soil, weather, plant and animal life. Place: “What is it like there?”
Movement: “How are people and places connected?” • People moving from region to region • Job change, better land, weather, religious freedom • Transit has made movement easier: • Airplanes, trains, automobiles • People becoming more “interdependent”
Human/Environment Interaction:“What is the relationship between the people and the environment?” • People attracted to a place for specific reasons • Florida • How people adapt to the environment • Clothing, diet • How people change their environment • Deserts and irrigation • How people have created problems with their environment: • Pollutions and waste • http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6650219631867189375
Region: “makes study of geography more manageable” • Divisions of the world based on : • Physical features • Plant and animal life • Governments • Languages • Uniform regions: • Corn belt, wheat belt, Bible belt, cotton belt, rust belt • Functional regions • Shopping malls • Cities • Transit systems
Geography and links with other academic subjects: • Science: collect data to prove or disprove theories or questions • History: understand the way places looked in the past • Political Science: see how different places are governed • Economics: understand how the location of resources affect people • Sociology: help understand societies
FORGOT THEM: • Just Ask MR. HELP • M -movement • R - region • HE - human/environment interaction • L - location • P- place
