What is geography? • Geography is the study of the earth and the ways people live and work on it; the study of the way places on the earth differ and the ways people organize themselves and use the earth’s resources; it also deals with the location of these places and the complex relationships between people and their environments.

  4. Location: “Where is it?” • Absolute location: the precise location on the globe • Longitude and Latitude • Relative Location: places in relation to other places

  5. Human features: The number and kinds of people that live there, activities, religions, languages and cultural backgrounds. Physical features: Land, water, soil, weather, plant and animal life. Place: “What is it like there?”

  6. Movement: “How are people and places connected?” • People moving from region to region • Job change, better land, weather, religious freedom • Transit has made movement easier: • Airplanes, trains, automobiles • People becoming more “interdependent”

Region: “makes study of geography more manageable” • Divisions of the world based on : • Physical features • Plant and animal life • Governments • Languages • Uniform regions: • Corn belt, wheat belt, Bible belt, cotton belt, rust belt • Functional regions • Shopping malls • Cities • Transit systems
