Discus throw is a throwing occurrence where athletes throw 2kg plate-like equipment from a 2.5m circle. • The discus is landed after the thrower; beginning at the back of the circle with one-and-a-half turns has been completed. • The requirement for discus throw comprises of a throwing circle, protective cage and landing region. • The throwing discus is made of bank iron, steel or other appropriate material, the top layer of which is flush with the ground surface. • The interior diameter of the circle measures 2.5m (±5mm) and the rim at least 6mm in thickness, 70mm – 80mm deep and coated white.
The core of the circle is constructed of concrete, asphalt or some other rigid but not slippery substance. The surface must be plane and 1.4cm – 2.6cm lesser than the upper edge of the circle rim. • All discus and hammer throws are applied from an inclusion or cage to guarantee protection of viewers, officials and athletes. • The cage shown in the following illustration is planned for use when the event is held in the sports ground with further events happening at the same time or viewers are present. But a much easier structure may be enough for the training sections.
The cage is planned, constructed and sustained to be proficient of holding up a 2kg discus being in motion at a speed of up to 25m per second. • There should not be any risk of the discus rebounding back towards the athlete or over the top of the cage. • When these prerequisites are assured, any form of cage plan and construction can be done. • The cage is U-shaped. The width of the entrance is 6m, placed 7m in front of the throwing circle centre. The ending points of the 6m wide mouth are the internal boundary of the cage netting.
The altitude of the netting boards or covered netting at their lowest point is 4m. Conditions must be completed in the plan of the cage to avoid a discus powering its way through any joints in the cage or the netting or under the netting panels. • The net is made from appropriate natural or synthetic fiber twine or from a gentle or hard tensile steel wire. • The maximum net size is 44mm for cord netting and 50mm for steel wire. • The highest danger zone for discus throws from this cage is about 69°, when applied by both right and left handed throwers in the same competition. The arrangement of the cage in the ground is important for its secure use.
The exterior of the landing region must allow discus to make a mark upon landing. It is made of natural grass or other appropriate substance. • The landing region is set from the center of the circle with an angle of 34.92° and spotted by 50mm width white lines, which are the inside edges that form the boundary of the region. • The length of the region is 80m. The angle of 34.92° is reached if the two region lines at a distance of 80m are spaced out 48m apart.
