  3. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Theological Training and Ministry

  4. On February 25, 1948, King is ordained and appointed Assistant Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

  5. On September 14, 1948, he begins his theological studies at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania.

  6. May 6-8, 1951, King graduates with a Bachelor of Divinity degree and delivers the valedictory address at Crozer.

  7. That fall on September 13, 1951, he begins his doctoral studies in systematic theology at Boston University.

  8. On September 1, 1954, King becomes the Pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. • The Montgomery bus boycott was organized while he was at Dexter Avenue.

  9. On June 5, 1955, he is awarded a Ph.D. His dissertation was entitled: “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.”

  10. On February 1, 1960, King returns as Assistant Pastor (to his father) at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

  11. On April 16, 1963, King writes his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

  12. On August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington, King delivers his “I Have a Dream” speech.
